SHARJAH — A new 20-km-long bus route from Sharjah Airport to Al Rashidiya in Dubai will be launched on Tuesday. Sharjah Transport Corporation has tied up with Sharjah Civil Aviation Department for this service.

“Effective Tuesday, March 2, the service will be available for the public from Sharjah Airport, passing by Al Qusais-Sonapur bus station, and ending at Al Rashidiya metro station,” Sharjah Intercity Transport Manager Adel Khalil said on Sunday.

Khalil said the new bus line was being introduced to meet demands of passengers at Sharjah International Airport. “It has been noticed that many Sharjah Airport passengers and visitors take two rides from the Sharjah Airport to Jubail bus station, and then to Dubai, which costs them double fare, time and effort.”

Route 111 will start with 17 trips per day. However, daily trips on working days are expected to increase and the frequency will be less during weekends. “We have not decided on the final number of buses yet, or the trips on the new route; this depends on public’s demand, and may be determined after a month’s experiment period.”

He said the service would start at 5am and the last bus would be at 10pm. “We will ply one trip every hour at only Dh10 per trip, no matter where the bus stops,” Khalil said. “This fare is very competitive as opposed to taxi tariff which starts at Dh20 from the airport, in addition to an extra Dh20 for inter-emirate trips, let alone the charge collected against the distance covered, with recalibrated meters.”

“Passengers may carry as many bags as they want, and they need not pay extra tickets for their luggage,” Khalil said. He said Air Arabia would promote the new bus service at Sharjah  airport. “Roads and Transport Authority, or RTA will also participate in activating the new service. Passengers using the new route may take any of the RTA means of transport from the Rashidiya metro station,” he said.

Shuhin Sadiq, an Indian, said the new route would be a good option for many passengers, especially workers.

“Air Arabia, being affordable, is the one most preferred by low-income passengers. They will benefit from the new bus trip to Dubai.” Sadiq then called for a new bus route to Layyah government buildings, close to Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority. “Many government offices have come up here recently. Taxis are rarely available there.”
