Doctor Accused of Punching Denied BailPublish Date: 2010-01-25 14:00:12 Story Code: 24651 AJMAN - An Indian doctor, who stands accused of blinding a UAE national in one eye, was denied bail by the Ajman Court, on Sunday. The 64-year old had allegedly punched the Emirati during an incident at GMC Hospital, Ajman on December 2 last year.
Lawyer for the defendant, Abdul Razzaq Al Saleh, during Sunday’s hearing, sought the release of his client on health grounds, citing heart problems. He also wanted to present testimonies from more witnesses to the incident, which is at variance with those made by other witnesses registered in the police report referred to the public persecution. The accused lawyer also demanded a laboratory test of the blood and urine of the victim. Speaking to Khaleej Times, Al Saleh said, “We will keep demanding bail for my client who suffers from cardiovascular disease, and has had several operations.’’ “At the next session, we’re again going to seek his release on bail. We have no defence witnesses called by the prosecutors yet. There are six to seven people.” The court heard the testimonies of the security officer of GMC hospital. According to the defence lawyer, the security officer saw the defendant hit the victim, who fell to the ground. There was no discussion before that and the screaming victim went to the cafeteria of the hospital to wash his face. The Indian doctor’s wife said, “My husband has a track record of excellent service during his seven years in GMC hospital.” She said he underwent a heart surgery a year ago and that prison conditions would worsen his health condition. “To what happened in December is nothing more than an unintentional accident. My husband went to help the security man who was harassed by the UAE national.” The lawyer of the victim, Abdul Hamid Alkamiti, had sought, during an earlier court session, to amend the indictment to include the hospital and the hospital security guard. He also wanted the maximum penalty against the accused and Dh21,000 for initial immediate compensation, prosecution payment and the attorney’s fees. © Khaleej Times 2010. All rights reserved.
