Water Supply to 2,000 Bachelors DisconnectedPublish Date: 2009-10-08 08:00:08 Story Code: 21363 UMM AL QUWAIN — The Umm Al Quwain Municipality has disconnected water supply to 25 houses in Old Al Salama to punish 2,000 bachelors living in a locality designated for families.
Mohamad Al Muala, in charge of workers’ affairs at the municipality, said the bachelors were given notices more than five months ago asking them to vacate the houses immediately, but they did not. The municipality had also warned landlords against accommodating workers in areas where only families were allowed to live. However, landlords ignored the warnings. That is why the municipality decided to cut the water supply to these houses last week, Al Muala said. The municipal committee on workers’ housing decided that bachelors should be allowed to live far from the densely populated residential areas. Only old areas of the emirate and the new industrial areas have been reserved for bachelors. However, the committee excluded Old Al Salama, Al Iza’a, Al Hamra and Al Raafa areas from this list because a lot of Emirati and expatriate families live there. In Old Al Salama, up to 95 bachelors lived in one house, Al Muala said. The houses were partitioned and each room was packed with up to eight workers. Landlords of these houses have flouted the housing committee’s regulations. © Khaleej Times 2009. All rights reserved. Share this story: Digg
