Illegal Filipino Drivers to be RepatriatedPublish Date: 2009-07-05 01:00:05 Story Code: 17401 DUBAI - Over a dozen Filipino drivers from a group of 137 who arrived in the UAE on visit visas will be repatriated next week, after the Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO) declined to endorse their contracts offered by a taxi company which did not stipulate a salary and hire drivers only on commission basis.
The recruitment was illegal because the agencies recruited the drivers without any job orders from the UAE, said a POLO official. Of the 137 drivers, 69 were repatriated in May and 25 last month, while a decision is awaited on the fate of others. Welfare Officer Elmer Joven at the POLO office in Dubai said the drivers, who were offered jobs with an Abu Dhabi taxi company, were being offered jobs on commission basis only. “Taxi services in Abu Dhabi are very cheap so it will be difficult for the drivers to reach the daily quota for them to earn a commission. Moreover, our government does not allow anyone to work on just commission basis.” The welfare officer, who is assisting the drivers who are still in the UAE, said that 28 of them are processing their employment papers. © Khaleej Times 2009.
