To Get Design Approval, Water Recycling System A MustPublish Date: 2009-06-29 10:00:13 Story Code: 17141 SHARJAH — The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) will not approve the design of residential, commercial and industrial buildings if the plan does not incorporate water recycling system.
The water and energy conservation campaign is aimed at promoting sustainable use of water and energy in the emirate. Through the campaign, Sewa intends to change the attitude of residents towards water consumption, said Isam Al Mulla, director of Water Directorate in SEWA. Al Mulla told Khaleej Times that all new buildings should include in their drawing the installation of the recycling systems and the old buildings had been ordered to install the system. The recycling system will bring water consumption down by 40 per cent and reduce the water bill. “Around 27 buildings have already started using the systems, which recycle water and used it for gardening, toilet flushing and other purposes,” Al Mulla said. Al Mulla added that SEWA had installed 1,080 water saving and recycling devices and 76 water meters in Sharjah’s mosques. The water conservation programme in mosques has helped reduce water consumption by 40 per cent. He said that SEWA has intensified its campaign to reduce water wastage in Sharjah. During June, 287 commercials, residential and industrial buildings were inspected and 41 of them were fined between Dh150 to Dh10,000 for various violations, including unhygienic water tanks and water wastage. Al Mulla urged villa and house owners to call SEWA’s nearest office in case water leakage is detected. Leakage is one of the main factors of water wastage. © Khaleej Times 2009. All rights reserved.
