Retest within 15 days only?

DUBAI - The driving institutes in Dubai are expecting the waiting period for appearing for retests to get a driving licence would be reduced to 15 days from next month. At present, the waiting period for a retest is almost two months.

Their hope hinges on signals from the officials of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). For instance, Ahmad Bahrouzian, CEO of the Licensing Agency of the RTA, had told Khaleej Times recently that the long wait would be over because the number of examiners, who take the driving tests, would be increased from the current 100 to 150 by the end of this year.

�We are aware that people have been facing problems in driving institutes due to the shortage of examiners. The problem is now being solved in a phased manner. The number of examiners at these institutes is being increased constantly. �Last year, we set a target of 100 examiners. This new target for this year is to reach more than 150. With the new appointments, the problem would be ending soon,� he said.

Until December 2006, personnel from the Dubai Police used to conduct the driving tests and re-tests.

In January last year, the RTA started appointing its own examiners for the tests.

The driving institutes had alleged that since the number of examiners was very less in each of the institutes, the time gap for the re-tests had gone up by more than two months.

Presently, Dubai has four driving institutes �- Emirates Driving Institute, Galadari Driving Institute, Belhasa Driving Institute and Al Ahli Driving Institute.

�The conditions have started to improve. Until last year, we had just 13 examiners, which included nine men and four women. Now, the number has gone up to 23. They include 16 men and seven women examiners,� said an official of the Emirates Driving Institute.
